Intraoral Cameras

Dental exams are a crucial component of helping you maintain the health of your mouth. With routine exams, we can spot issues in their early stages, enabling treatment to prevent more serious consequences. If you are experiencing specific symptoms, exams allow us to pinpoint the cause of your symptoms so that we can stop them in their tracks and restore the health of your mouth. A big part of your dental exams is a visual inspection of the structures in your mouth. At Aesthetic Dentistry of Bend - Thomas E. Wold, DMD, we can closely examine these structures with an intraoral camera.

What is an Intraoral Camera?

An intraoral camera is an alternative to the small handheld mirror used to examine the visible structures in your mouth. This tool is about the size of a large pen. There is a small optical camera on one end and is attached to a computer on the other. With this camera, we can see the more difficult areas of your mouth, allowing for a more accurate and complete examination.

How Does an Intraoral Camera Work?

The intraoral camera is a handheld device. We place the camera end into your mouth and move it around. The camera captures real-time images, which we can see on a computer monitor. The camera also allows us to take stills of the inside of your mouth so that we can focus on a specific region of your mouth more closely.

Taking a Closer Look

With the intraoral camera, we can use specialized computer software to take a closer look at the visible structures in your mouth. We can zoom in on target areas and enhance images for greater clarity. We can notice the small details in your mouth, allowing us to provide you with incredibly accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans, helping you to maintain optimal oral health.

More Comfortable Examinations

Traditionally, examining your mouth could require that you keep your mouth open for extended periods of time. At the same time, we would need to remain bent over your mouth. Not only can this be uncomfortable, patients with anxiety can become very nervous with us in such proximity. Taking stills with an intraoral camera, we can examine your mouth without you needing to keep it open. Nor do we need to remain bent over your mouth. This makes the process of examining your mouth more comfortable for you as well as for us.

See Inside Your Mouth

With traditional examinations of your mouth, you were completely unaware of what was going on. Even with explanations of what we are doing or what we see, many patients might have a hard time picturing what we are describing or might not believe that the situation is as serious as it is. With the intraoral camera, you can see everything that we see. Not only can this help you to understand the condition of your mouth, but it can also help patients with anxiety feel more comfortable.

Take a More Active Role in Your Oral Care

Images taken with an intraoral camera can be printed out for you to take home. These images provide you with a reference point. These images help you to notice changes in your mouth sooner, allowing you to take action right away.

The intraoral camera allows us to more closely examine the visible structures in your mouth so that we can provide you with more accurate diagnoses and much more effective treatment plans. Call Aesthetic Dentistry of Bend - Thomas E. Wold, DMD today at (541) 389-0261 for more information.

We frequently use intraoral cameras to show patients issues that have arisen within their mouth, since it is not easy to view much of your own mouth using a mirror.
