You Should Always Call Us if Biting Suddenly HurtsChewing good food is a delightful experience. As the flavors mix in your mouth and your senses are heightened, tasting your food is one of the best things in life. Whether you find yourself at the work cafeteria, a block party, or around the dinner table with your family, eating tasty food in good company has been an enjoyable pastime for people of all ages. This experience can start to diminish if you are experiencing pain in your mouth. If you are eating and biting your food starts to hurt, this is a warning, and you should contact our office immediately.

Why Does Biting My Food Hurt?

You may have a cavity. Tooth decay, or cavities can cause you pain after you eat certain types of food. Additionally, a large cavity in your tooth means you have a large hole in your tooth and food could get stuck in that hole. This can cause pain and pressure on your tooth.

You may have a cracked tooth. If you have pain when you bite down and you can determine a specific tooth where it hurts, it is probably a cracked tooth. This tooth, as well as the adjacent teeth, should be checked right away.

You may have a dental abscess. An abscess is an infection in the tooth, generally located at the tip of the root. When you bite, the infection inside the bone puts pressure against the tooth. The response you feel is pain when you bite or push on that tooth. This can be a serious infection and you will want to contact us as soon as you can.

Call us Right Away

It is hard to know what is going on inside your mouth when you experience acute pain while you are eating. Our best advice is to call our office for an appointment. It may be something we mentioned, but it may also be a problem with your gums or the root of your tooth.
