Dangers of Missing Teeth That Do Not Get RestoredTooth decay, injury and disease can all lead to tooth loss. While it may be tempting to ignore a missing tooth, especially if it is not directly in the front of your mouth, we highly suggest that you have the tooth restored. Why restore a tooth, you may ask, it's not hurting anything to have a little gap in my smile.

Well, actually, it is hurting you.

No Big Deal
We often hear patients shrug off a missing tooth claiming that it is not a big deal to them, and they don't want to waste time or money restoring their smile. Unfortunately, it is a big deal. While you may not be bothered by the appearance of a missing tooth, having a space in your gum line where a tooth, or several teeth are missing can have a seriously negative effect on your overall oral health.

You see, your teeth have roots, and these roots are firmly planted in your jaw bone. The jaw bone is stimulated by these roots and it continuously grows, dissolves and regenerates helping to keep your teeth in place and healthy.

Once a tooth or teeth are missing, the bone is no longer stimulated and stops this process. Over time, the bone begins to deteriorate and this can lead to additional tooth loss. Not to mention the shifting of your remaining teeth, which are attempting to 'fill in the gap' of your missing tooth.

Missing teeth is not the end of the world, nor is it the ultimate downfall of your oral health, but ignoring them can lead to other complications. If you are missing one or several teeth, please give our office a call today and schedule a consultation so that we can help you find the best solution for your oral health. We look forward to hearing from you!
