Many people do not realize the relationship between a healthy set of teeth and gums and their general wellbeing. The fact is, however, that failure to take care of your mouth can lead to a list of complications in your body, negatively impacting your health.

Taking time to brush and floss isn't just about having a pretty smile - it can also help prevent problems like diabetes, heart attack, and stroke!

The Relationship Between Your Oral Health and Your General Health

You could be suffering from gum disease and not even know it. Your mouth is teeming with bacteria, with some of them helpful but many more harmful. Early signs of gum disease include:

•  Swollen, red gums
•  Tenderness and pain
•  Bleeding after brushing and flossing
•  Foul taste in your mouth
•  Halitosis bad breath
•  Receding gumline

Taking care of your gums is as easy as brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing nightly, but for many of us, this important part of our healthcare regimen falls to the wayside. Failure to take care of your dental health can be quite dangerous, leading to the following issues:

•  Diabetes: Periodontitis can make the ability to control blood glucose more difficult.
•  Cardiovascular Disease: Systemic inflammation associated with gum disease can lead to a heart attack.
•  Upper Respiratory Infections: Inhaling oral bacteria has been shown to lead to pneumonia, emphysema, COPD, and bronchitis.
•  Birth Complications: Untreated gum disease can also harm your unborn baby and lead to premature birth.
•  Cancer: The bacteria found in your mouth has been discovered lurking inside cancerous tumors. Lung and breast cancer are both linked to these bacteria.

In addition to taking good care of your teeth and gums, you also need to schedule routine dental appointments with cleanings at our office to help protect both your oral and your general health. If it's been longer than six months since your last appointment, give us a call today to schedule your exam and take measures to preserve your overall wellbeing!
