Many children struggle with brushing their teeth, and if your child is one who despises their toothbrush and toothpaste, we are happy to help you make brushing a fun and enjoyable activity! To help your child love oral hygiene, we recommend doing one or more of the following things:
Hum a tune
Find a two minute tune and have your child hum it while they brush. During the song, encourage your child to get more involved by moving their lips, tongue, and jaw. If they do so, their oral cavity will be cleaned from different angles.
Create a bubble machine
Convince your child that they are a bubble machine! The more they scrub their teeth with the toothpaste, the more bubbles they will make. Then, make things even more fun by seeing how many bubbles they can make in a two minute time period.
Make it a family activity
Make brushing your teeth a family activity. Get everyone into the bathroom, even the family dog if you’d like, and have everyone begin by brushing their own teeth. Then, after 30 seconds or so, switch and clean each other’s teeth! If you or your child decides to brush the dog’s teeth, just make sure to use a different toothbrush and wash your hands afterward.
Put a cheap or old stereo in the bathroom and play a two minute song. Let your child sing and dance while they brush. Better yet, join them and make it a tooth-brushing party!
Use an hourglass
If you time your child’s brushes with an hourglass timer rather than a digital timer, they will be fascinated with the sand dropping from the top of the bottle to the bottom while they brush.
